Emerald Cruises: River Cruising with a Little More Personality and a Little Less $
Maybe you haven’t heard of Emerald Cruises (they do not focus on endless mailers with the latest greats offer, the do not have dozens of ships, and they do not spend near the $$$ of you know who), but they are a solid choice to consider, especially for those new to Riving Cruises.

I think Emerald is one of the more budget friendly options in European river cruising. It is not a “discount” cruise lines, however when compared to other players they deliver outstanding value in a small ship with modern lines, bright interiors and a few appreciated extras.

Emerald’s has carved out a sweet spot for travelers who want a beautiful, contemporary ship, excellent service and included experiences—but don’t necessarily need the formality or price tag of an ultra-luxury river cruise. Their Star-Ships are intimate enough to feel personal, but still offer some fun touches you don’t always find on a river vessel, including an indoor pool that transforms into a cinema, multiple dining spaces and EmeraldACTIVE excursions for travelers who want to explore by bike, hike or canoe rather than simply follow a guide around town. While other lines offer one excursion in each port, Emerald ups thae value by giving you choices. All while feeling comfortable and upscale without feeling stuffy.
You can dress up for dinner if you want to, but you aren’t expected to spend your vacation in formalwear. You can spend the morning exploring a historic European city, come back to the ship for lunch and a glass of wine, and then relax on deck as the scenery slowly changes outside your window. That’s really the magic of river cruising—you unpack once and Europe comes to you.

If I had to pick one area where I think Emerald has an edge over the big competitor (okay, Viking — and yes we like Viking, but just because it is the biggest does not always mean it is the best. So I digress, if I had to pcik one thing that I think Emerald does it would be how many different ways they give you to experience a destination. Viking does the traditional European river cruise exceptionally well—beautiful ships, excellent guides and a strong emphasis on history and culture. Emerald adds a little more get out there and experience it energy. Their EmeraldACTIVE program gives travelers the opportunity to hike, bike and even canoe, while EmeraldPLUS experiences can take you beyond the typical sightseeing tour and into more local, immersive experiences.

That makes Emerald especially appealing to the traveler who says, “I don’t just want to see Europe—I want to experience it.” And I think that’s an important distinction. Viking is a wonderful choice for someone who wants a classic, culturally focused river cruise. Emerald may be the better fit for someone who wants that same European experience with a little more activity, variety and personality.
3 Great Options For First Time River Cruises
Danube Explorer & Budapest
If you’ve never taken a European river cruise, the Danube Explorer is a pretty compelling place to start. The Danube is arguably one of Europe’s most fascinating rivers, and this itinerary gives you an incredible variety of experiences in one trip. Rather than simply checking off one European capital after another, you’re traveling through Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, with each country bringing its own history, architecture, food, traditions and personality.
Along the way, you’ll experience some of Central Europe’s great cultural highlights—Vienna’s imperial grandeur, Bratislava’s charming historic center, the medieval beauty of Český Krumlov and the spectacular scenery of the Wachau Valley. You’ll visit magnificent palaces and abbeys, explore historic markets and castles, discover the region’s wine-making traditions and even get a glimpse of everyday life with experiences such as a visit to a working farm. For travelers who enjoy being active, Emerald also offers hiking and cycling opportunities, giving you a chance to experience some of these destinations beyond the traditional guided sightseeing.
Why I Think It’s Especially Good for a First River Cruise
First, you get a little bit of everything. For a first-time river cruiser, that’s a big advantage. You don’t have to know yet whether you’re a history person, a foodie, a wine lover, a photographer or someone who wants to get out and explore on foot or by bike. The Danube gives you all of it. You can spend one day admiring Vienna’s grand architecture, the next wandering a medieval village, and another enjoying the scenery and wine country of the Wachau Valley. It’s a wonderful way to discover what aspects of European river cruising you enjoy most.
Second, Budapest is a fantastic way to end the journey. Rather than simply stepping off the ship and heading to the airport, this itinerary gives you two additional days in Budapest. And Budapest deserves the extra time. Divided by the Danube into historic Buda and lively Pest, the city combines grand architecture, thermal baths, wonderful food, beautiful bridges and a fascinating history. Having time to explore after the cruise means you’re not trying to squeeze one of Europe’s most interesting cities into a few hours between excursions.
And perhaps that’s what makes this itinerary so appealing to me as a first river cruise: it doesn’t feel like you’re taking a cruise just for the sake of cruising. The river becomes your transportation between some truly remarkable places. You unpack once, settle into your Emerald Star-Ship and let the Danube take you from one experience to the next.
For someone who has always wanted to see more of Europe but doesn’t love the idea of changing hotels every few nights, this is where river cruising really starts to make sense. You get the variety of a multi-country European vacation without the constant packing, unpacking and figuring out how to get from one city to the next.
Savor the Moment
My second pick is Savor the Moment – a curated collection of hosted theme cruises designed to deepen the Emerald experience through culture, conversation, and connection.
If you’re considering your first European river cruise but aren’t sure you want to jump into a busy itinerary that has you racing from one historic city to the next, Savor the Moment may be exactly what you’re looking for.
One of the things I like about this type of itinerary for a first-time river cruiser is you are already doing something you enjoy, so if you decide you decide river cruising isn’t for you, you still have a memorable vacation. But perhaps the biggest reason I’d recommend Savor the Moment to a first-time river cruiser is the name itself: it really is about slowing down enough to enjoy the experience. One of the things I really like about Emerald’s Savor the Moment collection is that it turns the traditional river cruise concept around a little bit. Instead of choosing an itinerary first and then figuring out what you’ll do once you’re there, you can start with something you already love and choose a journey that brings that interest to life.
Are you a wine lover? Emerald has hosted Sommelier Collection sailings where the wine isn’t simply something you enjoy with dinner—it becomes part of the experience, with tastings, wine education, paired dinners and destination experiences connected to the wine regions you’re visiting. On the Danube, for example, the journey can include experiences such as the Carpathian Wine Route and Viennese wine traditions.
Maybe food is your passion. Culinary Collection sailings bring a chef host on board, with demonstrations, discussions and destination-inspired dining that connects what you’re eating to the places you’re visiting.

Perhaps you’re the person who always comes home with hundreds of photographs. Emerald’s Photography Collection pairs beautiful European landscapes with a professional photographer who can help you improve your composition, lighting and storytelling while you’re actually out exploring the destinations.
And for something completely different, Emerald even offers Mah Jongg-focused sailings, combining open play, strategy workshops and tournaments with the experience of cruising through destinations such as Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna.
That’s what makes Savor the Moment interesting to me as a first river cruise. You’re not just sightseeing—you have another layer of connection to the places you’re visiting. The itinerary can satisfy your curiosity about Europe while also giving you time to become better at something you already enjoy, learn from someone who is an expert in that field, and meet other travelers who share your interests.
For a first-time river cruiser, that’s a pretty wonderful way to begin: choose a destination you want to see, choose an interest you’re passionate about, and let Emerald build the two experiences into the same vacation.
A Christmas Markets Cruise
My third choice for the first time river cruiser on Emerald is a Christmas Markets river cruise.
- Christmas Markets on the Rhine — typically combining markets in places such as Cologne, Koblenz and Strasbourg.
- Christmas Markets on the Danube — with Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and other Central European markets.
- Christmastime on the Danube — a shorter option focused on the Vienna–Budapest portion, which can be attractive for someone who doesn’t want an 8-day river cruise. Emerald has specifically offered both the shorter five-day version and the longer eight-day Danube itinerary.

If you’ve never experienced Europe at Christmas, a Christmas Markets river cruise is one of those trips that can completely change the way you think about holiday travel.Imagine waking up in one European town after another, stepping off the ship and walking directly into a Christmas market filled with twinkling lights, wooden stalls, the smell of cinnamon and roasted almonds, mugs of warm Glühwein and locals doing their holiday shopping. Add historic European cities, beautifully decorated squares leads to a feeling that will fill you with the holiday spirit.
Christmas markets aren’t just sightseeing. They’re an atmosphere, and experiencing them by river makes the entire trip feel like part of the celebration.
The Christmas markets may be what gets your attention, but they certainly don’t have to be the reason you take the trip. In fact, I think some of the best parts of a European Christmas Markets cruise have nothing to do with shopping.
Love history and architecture? You’re in luck. These markets are typically set in the heart of some of Europe’s most beautiful historic cities, so the Christmas decorations are almost an added bonus to the architecture, cathedrals, palaces and medieval old towns you’re already there to see.
A foodie? This may be your kind of trip. Christmas markets are a wonderful way to taste your way through Europe—regional sausages, pastries, gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, cheeses, chocolates and, of course, Glühwein and other seasonal drinks. And each region has its own specialties.
Prefer wine? That’s another reason to look beyond the shopping stalls. Emerald’s longer 2027 Christmas Markets of Europe itinerary includes the Carpathian wine route, while the journey also travels through some of Europe’s great wine regions.
Love music and culture? Vienna is a highlight. On Emerald’s 2027 itinerary, travelers can experience a classical concert in the “City of Music,” while other stops offer local entertainment and cultural experiences.
If you prefer people and authentic experiences to museums EmeraldPLUS experiences can be particularly appealing. One of the included experiences on the 2027 itinerary is visiting a Slovakian family in their home for coffee and cake and learning about local traditions. That’s the kind of experience you remember long after you’ve forgotten what you bought.
Another bonus is that you can take a Christmas Markets River Cruise, and be home to enjoy the season with your family!
Did you know Emerald also offers Yacht sailings? Oh YES! But that is a completely different subject!
